Elizabeth Rheude is Associate Professor of Clarinet and Head of Woodwind Studies at the University of North Dakota.  A graduate of Michigan State and Indiana State Universities, she has studied with a variety of artists including Elsa Verdehr, Stanley Hasty, Larry Combs, David Shifrin and John Spicknall.  An advocate of new music, Ms. Rheude has commissioned and premiered numerous compositions including James Fry's Kaleidoscope for Clarinet and Piano and Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Symphony.  She has been invited to perform at the International Conference of the College Music Society, conventions of the International Clarinet Association, College Band Directors National Association and Music Teachers National Association, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison Clarinet Celebration, Upper Midwest Flute Association FluteFest, University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, Michigan Symposium of New Music for the Clarinet and the Idaho/Montana Clarinet Festival.  Ms. Rheude is one of 35 clarinetists selected by the Worldwide Premieres and Commissioning Fund to simultaneously premiere British composer Michael Finnissy’s new work for clarinet in December, 2007.

An active adjudicator and clinician, Professor Rheude has judged the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition and the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Solo and Chamber Music Competitions at the state, regional and national levels. 

Ms. Rheude has won numerous awards for her teaching and playing, including the 1996 International Clarinet Association Recording Competition, the 1996 Vienna Modern Masters International Recording Competition (Special Commendation) and the 2000 North Dakota Music Educators Association Teacher of the Year.  She has recorded “Kaleidoscope – Music of James Fry,” “Solos for Young Clarinetists” and is a featured artist on “Music From the ICA.”  Professor Rheude is on the artist roster of Capstone Records.

Professor Rheude is the founder and artistic director of the Northern Plains Clarinet Symposium. She currently serves as state chairperson for the International Clarinet Association and state coordinator for the Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Solo and Chamber Music Competition.
