UND Music Department Teaching Evaluation Policy

Adopted in department meeting, May 3, 2005

In keeping with the UND Policy on Teaching Evaluation as approved at May 1, 2003 Senate meeting, and the College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Evaluation Guidelines, the UND Music Department assumes responsibility for:

1) making expectations and evaluation processes clear to those being evaluated, and
2) determining how much weight to give to different kinds of evaluation data.

This policy developed by the UND Music Department will be appended to the UND Music Department Bylaws in the manner of other departmental policies and procedures, with a copy to be retained in the College of Arts & Sciences Office.

Supporting Data

In keeping with University and College policy, the Music Department requires that the teaching performance of all instructors regardless of rank or tenure status be evaluated annually. This includes graduate teaching assistants, visiting and temporary professors, as well as part-time and full-time lecturers. As required by University and College policy, the Music Department requires that a minimum of three different sources of data be used in the evaluation of teaching, with one of those sources being students.

It is the responsibility of the instructor to submit to the department a "Faculty Evaluation Checklist" indicating what sources of data have been used in the evaluation process, and to submit the appropriate materials to the Department office. In all reviews, instructors are expected to cooperate with their departments to provide the data required.

Evaluation

Basic University Expectations of teaching include: 1) Respect for Students, 2) Knowledge of Subject, 3) Careful Preparation, 4) Effective Communication, and 5) Professional growth. Additional expectations may be added as deemed necessary by the College of Arts and Sciences or the Music Department.

Based on the data reviewed, the department will evaluate each instructor's teaching, provide a narrative commentary if deemed necessary, and assign a descriptive rating based on the following categories (as indicated on the College "Faculty Evaluation Form"): 1) Significantly Exceeds Expectations, 2) Exceeds Expectations, 3) Meets Expectations, 4) Falls Short of Expectations, and 5) Falls Significantly Short of Expectations.

Tenured, Tenure-Track and Professorial-rank faculty will be evaluated according to procedures of the College of Arts & Sciences by the Music Department Personnel Committee (described in the Music Department Bylaws).

Full- and Part-Time Lecturers and Graduate Teaching Assistants will be evaluated by the Department Chair or other appropriate administrator.

All faculty members shall have an opportunity to respond to their evaluation verbally and/or in writing.
