Remembering Don Johnson


Don Johnson, Cooperative Education Coordinator, Career Services/Co-op Education, died Aug. 16, at Altru Hospital from injuries sustained in a scooter/automobile accident. He was 63.

Johnson, son of Henry and Edna (Goebel) Johnson, was born Jan. 25, 1945, in Bismarck, N.D. He attended school in Lehr, N.D. Following his graduation from high school, he attended the University of North Dakota and earned his bachelor's degree in music education, graduating in 1968. He married Marlys Walz July 30, 1967, in Pettibone, N.D.

In July 1968 he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa, Rapid City, S.D., Germany and Belgium, and then retired in July 1988 from the Grand Forks Air Force Base. In 1975 he attended South Dakota State University, earning a master's degree in education administration. In October 1988 he began working in Career Services/Cooperative Education as a cooperative education coordinator, where he worked until his death.

Johnson was the choir director and served as chair of the board of elders at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Forks.

He is survived by his wife Marlys of East Grand Forks; two daughters: Michelle (Michael) Jerome of Mobridge, S.D., and Kristen (Joe) Prusak of Grand Forks; six grandchildren; his mother, Edna Johnson of Horace, N.D.; one niece and nephew; and father and mother-in-law, Rudolph and Katherine Walz of Jamestown, N.D.

Johnson was preceded in death by his father, Henry Johnson, and one sister, Noreen Echola.

Memorials are requested to the Immanual Lutheran Church of Grand Forks.

His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1710 Cherry St. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, and one hour before the service. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
