Remembering Arlen Anderson


Arlen U. Anderson, retired maintenance worker at Plant Services, died Dec. 9 at his home in Grand Forks. He was 90.

Anderson, the son of Gus and Anna (Urness) Anderson, was born Nov. 26, 1917 in Niagara, N.D. He grew up in North Dakota and attended schools in Fordville, Northwood and East Grand Forks, Minn. He worked for Flaats Potato Company where he met his future wife, Evelyn. They were married Nov. 26, 1947.

He worked for many years at Peavey Mill. He also worked for UND Plant Services. After retiring he and his wife moved to California for six years, only to return to North Dakota, the land where he grew up and loved. He was also a WW II veteran. His wife, Evelyn, died in 2003.

Anderson had a gerat sense of humor, even to his last day. He was a dedicated fan of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. He also enjoyed UND hockey. He loved fishing and caught his first ever muskee in June 2001. He also loved his 20-year-old dog, Peppy, who preceded him in death by just three days.

He is survived by his children, Arlene (Bob) Clayton, Fort Worth, Texas; Gary (Elaine) Arnebeck, Modesto, Calif.; Connie (Marcus) Bachmeier, Grand Forks; Nancy (Johnny) Reed, Modesto, Calif; Suzanne (Michael) DeHaemer, San Diego, Calif.; and Dan Anderson (Jennifer), Elwood, Ind.; 22 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and sister Jeanette (Duane) Chaffee, Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother Selmer, sister Blanche, and beloved dog.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Hope Covenant Church, 1601 17th Ave. S., Grand Forks. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 13, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St. Visitation will continue for the hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
