Research meteorologist and weather radar inventor Wurman coming to UND

Research meteorologist and weather radar inventor Joshua Wurman will present “Running the Wrong Way: Chasing Tornadoes and Hurricanes for Science,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in 210 Clifford Hall.

Wurman, inventor of the first Doppler on Wheels (DOW) mobile radar, will discuss his adventures using the DOW and other instruments to probe the mysteries within tornadoes and hurricanes. Tours of the DOW will begin starting at 5:30 p.m. that evening outside Clifford Hall.

Wurman’s visit to UND marks the beginning of a three-week deployment of the DOW to the greater Grand Forks area to study snow in a project called SNOwD UNDER (Student Nowcasting and Observations with the DOW at UND: Education through Research). More than 47 UND students and children from nine K-12 schools will participate.

The event is being hosted by the Department of Atmospheric Sciences and is open to the public. Student participants in SNOwD UNDER are especially invited to attend.

Wurman has appeared in many television shows, including the Discovery Channel’s series, “Storm Chasers.”

The DOW is assisting in the SNOwD UNDER through National Science Foundation grant # NSF-ATM-0734001.
