SIL colloquium will feature Regina Blass June 7
Regina Blass will present her findings on “Intercultural Aspects of the Speech Act of Promising from a Relevance Theoretic Point of View” at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7, in 300 Merrifield Hall. She holds an master's and doctorate in Linguistics from the University of London (University College, London, United Kingdom). Blass discusses the phenomenon of promise-making in speech in African societies, using Relevance Theory to understand the how an utterance handles the tension between commitment to a stated action and the desire to save face.
