Sherry Fieber-Beyer, a UND post-doctoral research faculty fellow, has a special duty to perform on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11.

She will be one in a solemn line of UND and Grand Forks area community members who will take turns reading the names of more than 6,200 veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan since the War on Terrorism was declared. The commemoration, part of the “Remembrance Day National Roll Call,” is set to take place at 1 p.m., Friday, in the UND Memorial Union Ballroom, and won’t end until every name is spoken.

Fieber-Beyer, a Jamestown, N.D., native and now a faculty member in the UND Space Studies Department, is not a veteran, nor has she served in the military. Still, she knows well the tragic sense of loss that sometimes comes with military service.

Among the names that she will read is that of her brother-in-law, Paul Beyer, killed in Iraq in 2006.

(He’s) missed but not forgotten,” Fieber-Beyer says.

UND is hosting the National Roll Call event in concert with the Military Association of College Volunteers (MACV). The University is joining more than 170 other campuses nationwide to pay tribute to the fallen.
