11/04/2009 -- UND philosopher Jack Russell Weinstein to host Nobel laureate
Noted welfare economist Amartya Sen to be guest on Weinstein's Why radio show

University of North Dakota philosopher Jack Russell Weinstein, founder and host of the popular Why? radio talk show on Prairie Public Radio, will be talking with Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen on the show Sunday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. (Central). The show with Sen is titled “The Other Economics: Welfare, Development and Justice.”

Amartya Kumar Sen is the Nobel Prize-winning economist and professor of economics and philosophy at Harvard University. Sen is especially known for his work on human development theory, welfare economics, the underlying mechanisms of poverty and gender inequality. He won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his work on welfare economics.

“It is easy to think that all economists believe the free market solves every problem and that government assistance is a detriment to distributive justice,” Weinstein said. “Sen argues otherwise. His groundbreaking work on famine, human capabilities, gender equality, and justice are found at the core of ‘development economics.’”

In this episode of Why?, Weinstein and Sen will discuss these issues and their connection to philosophy.
