University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley and First Lady Marcia Kelley will participate in the 2009 Cass County Summerfest Grand Parade in Casselton beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15.
Summerfest organizers will attempt to break the world record for the most fire trucks in a parade. The record is 159, achieved April 28, 2006, in Oberdiessbach, Switzerland. Casselton’s application has been approved by Guinness Book of World Records. Planners hope to attract 200 fire trucks for their parade.
The Kelleys will ride in one of UND's North Dakota-made Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) electric vehicles.
The four-day event begins today and ends Saturday, Aug. 15. A schedule of activities is available at: http://www.casscountysummerfest.com/
The Kelleys took part in this year’s Fourth of July parade in Park River, N.D., which included the town's quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) parade. Last year, the Kelleys spent the Fourth of July in Sheyenne, N.D., which also was celebrating its quasquicentennial. It was one of the first public events in North Dakota for UND’s first family, taking place just days after Robert Kelley officially took over as the University's 11th president. Before coming to UND, President Kelley was dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming since 1999. Mrs. Kelley also worked at the University of Wyoming as a lecturer in the Department of Communication Disorders.
