The University of North Dakota is hosting the 17th Annual Hultberg Luectureship Series, Thursday, Feb. 5 by the College of Business and Public Administration’s. Lectures start at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Fred Orth Lecture Bowl, 2nd floor of Memorial Union.
This year's speakers include:
* Linda Butts, Director of Economic Development and Finance for the State of North Dakota, Bismarck
* Sara Garland, President of the Greystone Group, Washington DC.
* Kim Lattu, Vice President - Director of Corporate Audit at Cargill, Minneapolis, MN
* Kay Walter, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), Minneapolis, MN
This year's topic, "Integrating Diversity into the Workplace" includes diversity issues that encompass more than just people of color; but include diverse ideas, beliefs, religions, sexuality, age, gender, those challenged physically or mentally, as well as others.
The Hans and Susanna Hultberg Lectureship was established by their daughter, Clara E. Anderson, through the University of North Dakota Foundation. Clara graduated from the College of Business and Public Administration in 1928. Clara's hometown was Washburn, ND.
Each year prominent women alumni from the College of Business and Public Administration, UND, bring their leadership and experiences to the University community through this event.
2004 Featured Speakers
Linda Butts
Linda Butts is the first woman to hold the title of Director of Economic Development and Finance for the state of North Dakota. This division of state government was rolled into the North Dakota Department of Commerce in the 2001 legislative session.
Butts spearheads innovative ideas like the Ambassadors Program, an ever-increasing group of former and fellow North Dakotans who hold influential positions around the country and in the state who are willing to promote business expansion opportunities in North Dakota as a means to diversify our state's economy.
Before entering state government, Butts was a small business owner in Carrington. Her company was twice named Outstanding Woman Owned Business.
A certified public accountant, Butts worked as an auditor for Eide Helmeke and Charles Bailly in Fargo. In 1994 she served as co-chairman for the state's delegation to the White House Conference on Small Business. She has served on several boards and commissions including the Greater North Dakota Association.
Butts has worked to build true partnerships with local communities and economic developers identifying ways the division may partner and support the work done by the local developers to create a common economic vision for the state.
She manages a staff of professionals who coordinate economic development activities with local, state, and federal agencies and higher education.
Linda and her husband, Alan, have two grown children and reside in Bismarck.
Sara Garland
Sara G. Garland is a government relations and public affairs consultant with expertise in the federal appropriations process. She develops and implements legislative and public affairs strategies and advises on grassroots and development initiatives. Garland is the principal of the Greystone Group, a government relations consulting practice.
Garland has worked on a broad range of legislative issues, including educational media, community economic development, communications, aerospace, energy, environment, federal employee and government reform issues, and agricultural diversification. She has been successful in securing federal funding for construction projects, basic and applied research, education initiatives, aviation, energy, parks, and telecommunications projects. Public affairs initiatives have included strategic planning for clients who have an interest in advancing a particular issue, clarifying a position or defining an organizational profile.
A 27-year veteran of Capitol Hill, Garland's experience includes senior positions with Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND), the late Senator Quentin Burdick (D-ND), and former Congresswoman Margaret Heckler (R-MA). As Senator Conrad's Chief of Staff, Garland was integrally involved in a wide variety of policy decisions. She supervised the legislative and management operations of the Senate office. She directed personal and committee staff for Conrad, who is the Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee and also serves on the Agriculture, Indian Affairs and Finance Committees.
Garland was the senior legislative assistant for appropriations to the late Senator Quentin Burdick, who served on the Appropriations Committee and was Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee. She was the senior legislative assistant to Rep. Margaret Heckler, who served on the Agriculture and Veterans Affairs committees.
Garland has represented numerous clients, including: Sesame Workshop; WETA; University of North Dakota; Minot State University; Bismarck State College; American Indian Higher Education Consortium; Pfizer, Inc.; America's Public Television Stations; Prairie Public Broadcasting; Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation; Swope Parkway Community Health Center; Northern Great Plains, Inc.; Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa; Laducer & Associates; National Public Radio; American Institute of Graphic Arts; Logistics Management Institute; and the National Council of Social Security Management Associations, Inc.
Garland received a BA and MA from the University of North Dakota. She has served as a member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission of the District of Columbia and serves on the Boards of the Council for a Livable World-PeacePAC, and the Agency for Instructional Technology. She is Chair of the Energy and Environmental Research Center Foundation. She is a former television reporter and college instructor. Garland is a recipient of the American Society of Association Executives' Government Relations Award as part of a team representing America's Public Television Stations, and is listed in the "Who's Who in American Politics". She is married to Kim E. Uhl and is the mother of three children.

Kim Lattu
Kim (Vossler) Lattu joined Cargill, Incorporated as an accounting trainee when she graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1978 where she earned a BSBA with an accounting major. She has worked in numerous businesses and functional areas during her career at Cargill including: Corporate Audit; Corporate Financial Reporting; Cargill Steel and Wire - Brookville, OH; Cargill Ferrous International; Caprock Industries - Amarillo, TX; Human Resources - Compensation; Travel Services; and the Controller's Department. Kim was named the Vice President - Director of Corporate Audit in November 2002.
Kim is on the Board of Governors for The Twin Cities Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. She is a C.P.A. and a C.M.A.
Kim and her family reside in Chanhassen, MN. She has 2 daughters, Rebecca 17 and Jenna 8. Her husband Steve is also a Cargill employee and is the Vice President - Controller for Horizon Milling. Kim grew up in Wishek, ND.

Kay Walter
Kay Walter attended the University of North Dakota from 1994 to 1998, earning a Bachelors of Accountancy in May of 1998. While at UND, Kay was involved in various activities on campus including the Accounting Club, Beta Alpha Psi, Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Telesis, National Honors Society, Alpha Omega and others.
Walter was hired by Coopers & Lybrand in October of 1997 and commenced her career with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) in September of 1998, after the merger of Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand in July of 1998.
Since joining PwC, Walters has served numerous clients throughout the country in both audit and consulting capacities. She is a member of PwC's national Consumer Finance Practice and specializes in serving lending organizations that originate mortgage, home equity and other consumer finance products. Additionally, Walters spends time throughout the year teaching various courses including PwC's new hire training as well as industry specific classes.
Walters is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the state of Minnesota and is actively involved in PwC's "High School Outreach" Junior Achievement program.
She graduated from Libertyville High School (Libertyville, IL) in 1994 and resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In her free time, Kay enjoys traveling and running, sometimes combining both, and this past year participated in the Hood-to-Coast 195-mile relay in Portland, OR and Horno Ridge Run at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, CA.
