News reporters and photographers are responsible for producing stories for our live television show. They generate story ideas, set up interviews with people relating to the story topic, write scripts and edit video. Reporters work with the editing system, Final Cut Pro, to edit projects.

Interns learn about writing for broadcast, visual communication principles and how to tell a story in an ethical, entertaining and accurate way. News reporters cover stories with national appeal. Interns on the news team have been on shoots about blood bank donations, how to get started running and what kinds of pets can prevent depression to name a few.

News Reporter

JOB DESCRIPTION
News reporters are responsible for producing stories for our live television show. They think of story ideas, interview various people relating to the story topic, write scripts and edit video.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the news team to generate ideas, develop story angles and set up shoots for video.
2. Arranges and conducts interviews, writes stories and edits video.
3. Attends two weekly team meetings. (Mondays 8:00 - 9:00 a.m., Thursdays 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.)
4. Works to keep up with local and national news.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to remain positive during challenging situations.
2. Ability to work in a team situation.
3. Strong communication and organizational skills.
4. Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 lbs.

PREFERENCES
The following skills and related job experience are preferred in candidates, but are not required:
1. Some experience as a print, television or radio reporter.
2. Successful completion of courses that relate to this job description.
3. Experience in a leadership role.
4. Ability to write, shoot and edit video.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 12 hours a week. This includes two regularly scheduled weekly meetings:

Mondays 8:00 - 9:00 A.M.
Thursdays 6:30 - 7:30 P.M.

The amount of hours per week is subject to change depending on circumstances. The reporter position is a one semester non-paid position. Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 lbs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The reporter is required to follow the guidelines established by the executive directors for on-camera presentation. The reporter will not alter their appearance without first seeking approval from their team leader. Team leaders will not approve the following: visibly pierced facial parts with body rings; drastic changes in hair color; drastic changes in hair length, including hair extensions; and/or facial tattoos. Reporters will be expected to read copy and accurately pronounce words at a style and rate consistent with national broadcast standards. In addition, reporters cannot publicly endorse products, services or political campaigns.

Photographer/Videographer

JOB DESCRIPTION
The photographer shoots and edits video segments for our live television show. The photographer generates story ideas, works closely with reporters, shoots all the video elements for a story, edits video and uses creative storytelling techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the news team to generate ideas and develop story angles.
2. Works with reporters to schedule equipment, shoot and edit stories.
3. Edits video segments that are associated with the live show.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to remain positive during challenging situations.
2. Ability to work in a team situation.
3. Strong communication and organizational skills.
4. Must have a valid driver’s license, ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 lbs.

Assistant News Director

JOB DESCRIPTION
The assistant news director provides leadership to the news team. They work with the news director to make decisions about stories, assignments and newscast content. They also direct weekly news meetings, help establish team goals and act as a news reporter. The assistant news director serves on the Studio One Executive Council and Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works with the news director to run weekly staff meetings. This includes generating story ideas, giving assignments, determining story line-up and scheduling.
2. Works with the news director to prepare the weekly newscasts. This includes stacking the news segments and editing news copy.
3. Works as a news reporter (see news reporter job description).
4. Participates in weekly feedback sessions.

REQUIREMENTS
1. At least one semester of experience with Studio One.
2. Some experience as a print, television or radio reporter.
3. Strong communication and organizational skills.
4. Experience in a leadership role.
5. Ability to shoot and edit video.
6. Ability to resolve conflict in a positive manner.
7. Ability to work individually and as a member of a team, when required.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 18 hours a week (total hours with news reporter duties), including the following times:

Mondays 8:00 - 9:00 A.M.
Wednesdays 4:00 - 4:30 P.M.
Thursdays 6:30 - 7:30 P.M.
Fridays 9:05 - 10:05 A.M.

The amount of hours per week is subject to change depending on circumstances. The assistant news director is a one semester non-paid position. Applicants who are available for two semesters are preferred, but consideration will be given to qualified candidates that are only available for one semester.

News Anchor

JOB DESCRIPTION
The news anchor serves as a member of the news team as a news reporter. For the live show, the anchor presents the news. They also work on the Headline News Team to select national stories, write scripts under deadline and edit news copy. The news anchor is usually filled by someone with previous experience in Studio One.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Works as a news reporter (see news reporter job description).
2. Writes and edits copy as part of the Headline News Team for the live show.
3. Anchors the news segments and works with other cast members during ad-lib segments of the show.
4. Works with the news director to improve show elements.
5. Participates in weekly feedback sessions.

REQUIREMENTS
1. Some experience as a print, television or radio reporter.
2. Strong communication and organizational skills.
3. Ability to project a professional presence on television.
4. Ability to shoot and edit video.

PREFERENCES
The following skills and related job experience are preferred in candidates, but are not required:
1. At least one semester of experience with the Studio One news team.
2. Experience in a leadership role.
3. Coursework that relates to this job description.
4. Ability to commit two semesters to position.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 12 hours a week, including the following times:
